“Music from the Screen”

CONROE, TX – The Conroe Symphony Orchestra is gearing up for its fourth concert of the season, “Music from the Screen” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Conroe High School located at 3200 W. Davis Street (SH 105), in Conroe.

The Symphony, currently in the middle of its 21st Season, will be under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Dr. Don Hutson.  The highly anticipated spring concert will feature music for all ages, including: Peter and the Wolf, the Miller’s Dance, Music from the movie Amadeus, Superman and Pirates of the Caribbean and the Flintstones, just to name a few.  This concert will feature Saxophone Soloist, Jacob Nance, the 2017 Juanita Miller Concerto Competition Winner in the Wind Division. Jacob will perform Concerto for Alto Saxophone by Alexander Glazunov accompanied by the full orchestra.

Jacob Nance, born in 1999, is from Lubbock, Texas and is a freshman at the University of Oklahoma.  He started his musical career playing piano at age five and began playing saxophone in the New Deal Band program in fifth grade.  In sixth grade, Jacob made 1st chair in the Region 16 ATSSB All Region Band, a distinction he’s held throughout middle school and high school.  In 2014, Jacob made the ATSSB All State Band as a freshman and was selected again his sophomore, junior and senior years.  He was selected as 1st chair in the All State Band in his sophomore, junior and senior year.

Jacob’s solos advanced to UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest each year he attended high school and he has earned consistent superior ratings.  He was selected as an Outstanding Performer at the TSSEC in both 2015 and 2016.

In 2016, Jacob performed on soprano saxophone with High School Honor Ensemble at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biannual Conference that was held at Texas Tech University.  In December 2016, he was selected as a finalist in the wind division of the Texas Association for Symphony Orchestras’ Juanita Miller Concerto Competition.  On January 14th Jacob won the wind division of the competition and performed in April 2017 at the TASO Winners Recital.

Jacob is currently attending the University of Oklahoma where he is studying Music Performance and Music Education.  He is a member of the University of Oklahoma’s competing undergraduate saxophone quartet as well as the Pride of Oklahoma and the University’s band program.  Jacob is a member of the First United Methodist Church.  He studied piano with Joy Moutos and has studied saxophone with Mr. Rodney Gurley, Mr. George Riddell, Dr. James Barger, and Dr. Jonathan Nichol.

On April 21st, “Music from the Screen” will be a night for the whole family to enjoy great music from our local Conroe Symphony Orchestra!
